The newest addition to DC’s Extended Universe is the first female superhero major motion picture to be released in over a decade. Wonder Woman opens with Diana Prince, an Amazonian Princess played by Gal Gadot, receiving a photographic plate from Wayne Enterprises. A memory is triggered and we are transported back to WWI.
This is an origin story and tells how Wonder Woman came to be the superhero that we know and love today. The June 2017 release set records for the highest grossing woman-led comic book character movie. It also passes the Bechdel Test, a standard for women’s presence in works of fiction, showing that a woman doesn’t need a man to be a solid character. This has made a lot of women happy with the direction that filmmakers are taking in regards to women in movies. Wonder Woman is rated PG-13. There is violence, since it’s an action movie and set mostly during WWI. There’s also some suggestive content in regards to the relationship between Diana and Steve Trevor, played by Chris Pine. Gadot epitomizes a realistic and positive body image, while sporting a modernized version of her iconic costume. All in all we believe that this version of Wonder Woman is a good role model for women, and a great action hero for everyone!
